Connect to the Internet

  • Turn the modem on (if you have an external modem).
    • You may need to switch the cord from the phone to the modem.
    • Press the on/off button on the modem.
  • Click on the Internet icon on the desktop (one should be there once you've installed it). It will probably ask for your password, then click "Connect".
  • Wait until it says it has connected and then you're free to open Internet Explorer or Netscape to surf the Internet!
  • See here for more details of how to use programs in general.

Connection isn't working

  • Check that the modem is connected to the outlet where the phone goes in.
  • Check that the modem turned on. The modem should display a light (at least one) when the modem is turned on.
  • Double click on the little icon (two computers) in the task bar
    • If there is no icon, you are not connected. Double click on the connection icon on the desktop.
  • A little window (modem window) should pop up. If the window says Reconnect or Cancel, you have been disconnected. If possible, check to see if anyone has called. I use *10#
  • Call Waiting on the phone can interrupt your Internet session.
    • Call waiting is a service for when you're on the phone you hear a beep for when someone else is trying to get through.
    • If you want people to be able to get through, leave it on. It may take several rings for them to get through.
  • If the modem window has the timer still counting, you are still connected. Try another site or the other browser. If nothing works, disconnect and try again in a few minutes.

Favourite sites

  • Your Favorites folder, found in the Start menu, has links for the Internet. You can also follow (click on) the same links in Internet Explorer to take you to sites. Netscape also has its version of a "favorites" folder called Bookmarks. There is a Favorites/Bookmarks button on each browser.
  • You can add more sites to your Favorites list as you like by clicking on the menu item Favorites, then click on Add to Favorites.

Security

  • Security on the Internet is particularly important with so many viruses around. You are basically safe if you do not open/download/save any files from people you don't trust. This includes email (you would have to click on something like download/open file. Simply opening the email should be fine. People can also send you files through messengers and chat.
  • If you have a virus scanner the default is usually to scans files as you save them to the computer, but there are always new viruses out there, so be careful who you accept files from.

Using a virus scanner

  • If you are worried that you might have a virus on the computer (i.e.. weird things happening that you think shouldn't happen), or even if you just want peace of mind use a virus scanner. If you don't have a virus scanner go to a shop where they sell software (programs) and buy one.
  • Double click on the little virus scanner icon in the right section of the task bar to open it.
  • Click on the drive or folder you want scanned then click "Go/Start".
  • If anything comes up as having a virus in the report:
    • click yes to have it cleaned or deleted.
    • If that option is not offered, write down exactly where the file is, open My Computer and find the file and delete it.
    • If the scanner says a file is "Infected/contains a virus" or "Suspect", delete it.
  • It will automatically check files you download from the internet.
  • If it ever asks for an update agree to it.
  • See here for more details of how to use programs in general.

Surf the Internet & send email

  • Type in the URL/web site address into the white box near the top of the window and hit the "Enter" key.
  • There are several links in your Favorites folder, which you can use through Internet Explorer (IE) to explore some of the sites on the Internet.
  • There are also many search engines out there to help you find what you're looking for. Click on the "Search Engines" link in Favorites or click on the Search button, then enter the key words you wish to search.

Example sites

The Internet has many uses. Below is a brief list of purposes in which the Internet is used. Please note that I have provided an example site for every purpose, but that it is important to be aware that there are an abundance of other sites I could have just as easily listed. I have only provided one of each for somewhere to start: If you're new to the Internet and didn't realise how much there was to do - go and have fun exploring!
