Downloads cover two main categories:
  1. Any files from the Internet that you choose to save onto your computer for later use ('down' load it from up there in the Internet). You may wish to download programs to use on your computer, pictures, or simply files sent to you from friends in email.
  2. Also, any page you look at on the Internet has at least text or images for you to see. Everything you see is automatically put into a temporary folder on your computer, which is also 'downloading'.

Security

Be comfortable that you can trust the source of the file (viruses).

  • save file to disk (if you want to keep it), or open file if you only want to view it.
  • If saving it, click on Browse,
  • Click on the arrow to the right of the very top white box
  • go to [C:] then My Documents, then OK.

Saving a picture off the Internet

  1. Right click on the image
  2. Click on Save Image As
  3. Click on the right arrow the the right of the very top white box
  4. Browse to [C:] then My Documents, then click OK.

Downloading and Installing Programs

  1. You may wish to make a special folder on your computer for downloads so you know where they are later.
    1. Click on "My Computer" on the desktop
    2. Click on C-Drive and see if there's a folder called "TEMP". If there is, you may wish to save your downloaded programs into that so they can be deleted later.
    3. If there is no "TEMP" folder, you can create one by clicking on "File" (in My Computer), then "new", then "folder" and type "TEMP" or "Downloads" - whatever you would like the folder to be called, then press "Enter".
  2. Go to the site where the program is located and find their 'downloads' section.
  3. Click on the link to the download you want. (Note: Sometimes there are different downloads for different operating systems. eg Windows 95, Windows ME, Macs, etc. Pick the one that matches your computer.)
  4. A window will pop up for you to choose where on the computer the file is to be saved. Go to C-Drive, then click on the folder you named either "TEMP" or "Downloads", and click "OK".
  5. A different window should pop up showing that it has started downloading. They often say how long it will take to complete the download in this window. It may take a while, depending on your connection speed.
  6. Once the download is complete go to "My Computer" again and find where you saved it. ("TEMP" or "Downloads").
  7. Double click on the file you downloaded and it will go the the installation process. If there is anything you have to do, it will take you through it step by step. You will have to say where you want the program saved. This is different to the file you downloaded as that was only the installation file. It will usually suggest a place for it to be saved, probably easiest if you just agree with it.
  8. Some programs like to have the computer rebooted (closed down then restarted), but most small programs will be fine to use straight away. There will probably be an icon for it on your desktop, otherwise go to where your programs are held (eg in Windows 95+: Start, Programs).
